RAM stands for "Random Access Memory." Computers use RAM to access information quickly. Think of it like your short term memory. RAM is volatile, meaning it requires an electric charge in order to retain it's information. In theory the more RAM you have the faster your computer can access information, however there are practical limits to how much RAM you should have. These days 4GB of RAM is the minimum for personal computers, with some smartphones even shipping with the same amount. 8GB of RAM is likely the sweet spot for most users however 16GB is the preferred amount for gamers. The only reason to have more than that is if you are running multiple virtual machines, or run memory intensive applications such as video editing software. Upgrading your RAM is a very fast and affordable way to increase the speed of of your computer. Airdrie Computer can upgrade all types of systems from Windows XP to Windows 10, including Mac!
